The rest of us may have some doubts. But not about the sentiments, which I suspect are just—nor about the impulses behind the adaptation of so patently po litical a theme. The mode of the Western is pastoral, not patriotism, and political content is there fore as natural to it as horses, pistols, or Monument Valley. Given a story of considerable sensational potential, Nelson has stuck everything music, movement, dialogue, stray bits of location scenery in its way. But one performance, and a subject, does break through the impediments. The performance is, of course, Candice Bergen's and the subject is her style and her sympathies. Foul mouthed, belching, a natural aristocrat, she embodies not so much women's lib as liberated woman, and there fore a better anachronism than most you will find at home on the range. It is not a faultless performance, but it is very thoughtful and energetic and free.
