In the wake of last night's 7. January 13, The video website YouTube is running a full-court press on Haiti in the wake of the 7. Video from the Red Cross explaining the severity of the earthquake, degree cellphone video clips of Haitians standing aghast at the rubble this morning, and injured people being carried through the streets of Port-au-Prince by the light of dawn are some of the videos packed front and center into YouTube's "Spotlight" section. The majority of the site's "Recommended for You" section is related to Haiti - some of it grainy, shaky clips of the damage, some of it Americans offering solidarity from behind their computers, some of it average joes playing newscaster, and one photo montage of the disaster set to Michael Jackson 's "Earth Song" and asking for help and prayers. With telecommunications down in Haiti, there is still a dearth of information coming out of the island this morning. And, at a time when many Haitians and Haitian-Americans in the US remain unable to reach their relatives to see if they are alive, the YouTube clips afford some of the only footage immediately available.
Haitian Universities on YouTube (May 2020)
The video was created as a response to the celebrity remake " We Are the World 25 for Haiti " that was released eight days earlier, and is a cover of " We Are the World ", the charity single produced in support of famine relief in Africa. Lavie conceived, organized, performed in, and with fellow YouTube personality Iman Crosson , co-edited, the video for charity relief of victims of the Haiti earthquake occurring the month before. Lavie said that she "was in the car driving and the idea to do a YouTube version of We Are the World popped into her head. In interviews on CNN and ABC World News , Lavie explained how the video was made, given that its 57 contributors would not be performing in the same studio and generally did not even know each other. The singers then returned their respective vocal video segments to Lavie electronically, for the visual segments to be edited , and the audio to be mixed and edited , over the course of "three days and one sleepless night. The video was posted as a YouTube "video response" to the celebrity remake video on YouTube, whose last minute included a video annotation inviting such video responses. CNN's Josh Levs made special note of Lavie's use of YouTube's video annotation feature: her video continually provided successive video annotation hyperlinks to the YouTube channels of the respective contributing singers as their images appeared on-screen throughout the performance.
